Jaidev Thackeray in conversation with Bombay Times

It''s Diwali morning and his apartment in Bandra''s Kalanagar is buzzing with people.
Jaidev, the estranged son of Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray, may be out of the home and party, but he still lives in close proximity to the Thackerays'' residence, Matoshree. Close friends laud his creative instincts, while critics dub him a maverick and a ''confused'' Thackeray. In an exclusive interview to Bombay Times, Jaidev speaks about his father and political aspirations.

Political about-turn: I never said that I wanted to join the NCP. I had just said that Maharashtra needed a strong Chief Minister at this stage and that I greatly admired the leadership skills of Sharad Pawar and A R Antulay. Bas. These rumours will die down soon.

Pawar failure? Sharad Pawar has not ill-treated me. He hasn''t rejected me either. It''s just that he did not want me to be part of NCP because that could have hurt my father. Pawar and Balasaheb may be political opponents, but personally they are close friends.

Silence is golden: I left the Sena for the sake of my principles and also due to personal issues, which I will not reveal; if I do, hell will break loose. I respect my father and so I prefer to stay quiet.

Banda yeh bindaas hai: I am quite bindaas by attitude. Maybe because of this Balasaheb always felt that I could not be given any work which required responsibility. But I was quite active in the party till 1995. I don''t want to comment on the way the Sena is functioning today. I never was in the race for the post of the party chief.

Home-coming: If they (Sena) call me back, I will go. But I would like to have a specific role defined for me. If I find no place in the Sena then, obviously, I can''t do anything about it. I cannot disrespect my father. As for joining any other political party right now, I can''t say anything as of now...
